The Gecko and 4D Printing

Gecko and 4D Printing

In the world of technology, if you blink, you are going to miss something.  This is why we should keep our eyes wide open, like the Gecko.  Most Geckos cannot blink, so they lick their eyes to keep them clean and moist.  If you want to stay on top of the printing industry, get the eye drop ready, because the pace of change and innovation has accelerated.

Even though 3D printing has been around for a while, the patents on the original technology are expiring, opening the door for competition and new applications.  Many of the big patents expired in the first half of 2014, causing a radical shakeup in industrial engineering.  Now, engineers can create complex new shapes using less aluminum, copper, and steel, without losing any strength.  Can you imagine the changes that are about to take place in the world? Oh, but don’t blink.

At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, there are some scientists who have already invented 4D printing. Yes, 4D printing is here. They have created materials that change when they come into contact with elements such as water.”  It’s amazing.  Just like some species of Geckos have the ability to change color to blend in with their surrounding, one day we will be able to print clothing or military uniforms that will change colors to blend in with the environment. Don’t blink.  Please don’t blink, or you might miss something.

4 Benefits of Information Technology

Press Release: January 5, 2015

Topics: Information Technology (IT), IT

One of the keys to survival in the business world today, is leveraging information technology for business success. Also known as IT, information technology is a comprehensive term that includes all types of technology used to exchange, store, use or create information.  If not all, almost every business uses phones, computers, servers, peripheral devices, and Internet connectivity equipment in its day-to-day operations.1 In an article entitled, “What are the Advantages of Information Technology?” Kyra Sheanan shares why IT must play a vital role in any business seeking to maximize its productivity.  In this article, she mentions four benefits of IT.

1.  Communication

Communication is essential to the business world, and information technology gives your company the resources it needs to communicate quickly and effectively. An IT department can hook up your employees with email, video conferencing equipment and internal chat rooms, so they can always have an efficient way to conduct business and communicate.

2.  Work Remotely

IT systems give you remote access to your company’s electronic network, so that you can work from home or on the road. This accessibility allows you to increase your productivity because you can still get work done, even when you aren’t physically in the office.

3.  Storing and Protecting Information

Information technology creates electronic storage systems to protect your company's valuable records. Secure maintenance of customer and patient files is vital to business integrity. Storage systems, such as virtual vaults, keep information safe by only allowing certain users within your company to access, withdraw, add or change the documents.2 According to an article in Science Daily, IT security engineering systems protect your electronic information from being hacked, or wiped out during a technological disaster. Electronic security engineering means your valuable records will remain untouchable.

4.  Automated Processes

In business, people look for ways to do more work in a shorter amount of time. A November 2000 newsletter published by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco explains that information technology improves your company's efficiency by developing automated processes to take burden off your staff. In turn, your employees are free to work on other things while the computer runs their reports, creates queries, tracks projects and monitors financials.

Three 3D Printing Trends in 2015

Press Release: December 30, 2014

Topics: 3D Printing Technology

There is a tremendous amount of research and development, growth, and innovation going on in the world of 3D Printing.  It is literally touching, changing, and enhancing our lives in so many ways. Following are just three amazing examples and trends to look for in 2015!

Reebok Checklight 3D Printing Technology

1.  Medical Advances

Reebok, a giant in the sportswear industry, has developed a wearable warning device that instantly registers the force of impact to the head of an athlete at contact, with a visible reading.  It is called the Reebok Checklight.  This medical device will allow athletes and their coaches to better diagnose a blow to the head at the very the moment it occurs.  Thanks to 3D printing technology, the flexibility and design of this device will create a safer work and play environment for the millions of people who participate in helmet-required sports.  According to Reebok research, “of the 113 million participates, 1 in 100 would suffer a traumatic brain injury”. This is alarming. In the US alone, there are as many as 3.8 million concussions a year during sporting and recreational activities.  Reebok Checklight will make helmet-required sports safer.  In 2015, expect medical advances like Checklight to continue.

2.  Weapons of War

Imagine jets “healing” themselves as they fly, drones being built aboard planes in flight, planes that can transform in mid-air and come together to form one large aircraft and then separate at will, and laser guns that can do more damage than any traditional weapon of war today.  Is this possible?  Yes, because of 3D printing technology.

According to Mark Piggott, an author and journalist for the International Business Times, The Ministry of Defense has confirmed it is involved in researching these types of weapons, and "the US navy warship USS Ponce will have a laser weapon fitted this summer.  Once assembled, laser guns can be far more destructive than traditional missiles and at a fraction of the cost….” This weapons of war trend will continue into 2015 and beyond.

3.  Higher Quality, Lower Price, and Faster 3D Printers

On October 29, 2014 HP announced a new 3D printing technology called Multi Jet Fusion. This new technology, allowed HP to create an industrial 3D printer that is 10 times faster and 50% less expensive than current systems on the market.  Laser Action Plus, a premier Hewlett Packard and Toshiba copier dealer in Florida have 3D printers starting at just $999.  As the trend of higher quality, lower price, and faster 3D printers continues, expect to see this technology in your office or on your desktop soon.

3D Printing Creates a Magical Moment For Emily's Mom

Press Release: December 16, 2014

Emily was born with a rare disease called arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) that caused her legs to be folded up by her ears, and her shoulders to turn in towards her chin. Unlike other children, Emily's movement was limited because her muscles were underdeveloped.  According to her mother, Megan Levelle, "Emily could only move her thumb".  When she was taken home from the hospital, her parents prayed for a miracle, and the answer came through 3D Printing technology.  It was a magical moment for Emily and her mom.

A research design engineer at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware will never forget that moment.  He stated, “To be a part of that little special moment for someone else, can’t help but tug at your heartstrings.” — Whitney Sample

Thanks to 3D Printing technology, Emily's magical arms fit her perfectly.
