There is a tremendous amount of research and development, growth, and innovation going on in the world of 3D Printing. It is literally touching, changing, and enhancing our lives in so many ways. Following are just three amazing examples and trends to look for in 2015!
1. Medical Advances
Reebok, a giant in the sportswear industry, has developed a wearable warning device that instantly registers the force of impact to the head of an athlete at contact, with a visible reading. It is called the Reebok Checklight. This medical device will allow athletes and their coaches to better diagnose a blow to the head at the very the moment it occurs. Thanks to 3D printing technology, the flexibility and design of this device will create a safer work and play environment for the millions of people who participate in helmet-required sports. According to Reebok research, “of the 113 million participates, 1 in 100 would suffer a traumatic brain injury”. This is alarming. In the US alone, there are as many as 3.8 million concussions a year during sporting and recreational activities. Reebok Checklight will make helmet-required sports safer. In 2015, expect medical advances like Checklight to continue.
2. Weapons of War
Imagine jets “healing” themselves as they fly, drones being built aboard planes in flight, planes that can transform in mid-air and come together to form one large aircraft and then separate at will, and laser guns that can do more damage than any traditional weapon of war today. Is this possible? Yes, because of 3D printing technology.
According to Mark Piggott, an author and journalist for the International Business Times, The Ministry of Defense has confirmed it is involved in researching these types of weapons, and "the US navy warship USS Ponce will have a laser weapon fitted this summer. Once assembled, laser guns can be far more destructive than traditional missiles and at a fraction of the cost….” This weapons of war trend will continue into 2015 and beyond.
3. Higher Quality, Lower Price, and Faster 3D Printers
On October 29, 2014 HP announced a new 3D printing technology called Multi Jet Fusion. This new technology, allowed HP to create an industrial 3D printer that is 10 times faster and 50% less expensive than current systems on the market. Laser Action Plus, a premier Hewlett Packard and Toshiba copier dealer in Florida have 3D printers starting at just $999. As the trend of higher quality, lower price, and faster 3D printers continues, expect to see this technology in your office or on your desktop soon.
